How to Study the Bible

Learning how to sit down and complete a proper Bible study can be intimidating. What if we do it wrong? What if we completely misunderstand what God was saying?

I completely understand. When in seminary, every class included a major component on bringing it all back to proper Bible study, called “hermeneutics.” This system was intense but beautifully complete. I loved starting with the original Greek and breaking down each component. Digging into the context of geography, culture, politics, and social constructs brought it to life!

Trying to bring that level of Bible study to daily devotionals presented a serious challenge. I didn’t want to write an intensive academic paper on these passages in Scripture. I wanted to learn them for myself. Yet, how do you do that without missing something important?

I’ve spent the last several years fine tuning a way to bridge the gap between seminary level academic study and devotional level study. Taking the main components of the deep dives and leaving the more academic exercises still gives me pause (what if I miss something?!), but I know there is a time and a place for that level of work. There is tremendous value in intensive deep dives, but there is also tremendous value in things like reading through the Bible in a year or shorter devotionals done more frequently (when done properly).

While I still love my deep dives, I save a lot of that for my YouTube lessons. For my personal devotions I stick with the shorter method I developed. Is this something you’d be interested in learning? Let me know!
